Improvised fighting vehicle

An improvised fighting vehicle is a combat vehicle resulting from modifications to a civilian or military non-combat vehicle in order to give it a fighting capability. Such modifications usually consist of the grafting of armour plating and weapon systems. Various militaries have procured such vehicles, ever since the introduction of the first automobiles into military service.

During the early days, the absence of a doctrine for the military use of automobiles or of an industry dedicated to producing them, lead to much improvisation in the creation of early armoured cars, and other such vehicles. Later, despite the advent of arms industries in many countries, several armies still resorted to using ad hoc contraptions, often in response to unexpected military situations, or as a result of the development of new tactics for which no available vehicle was suitable. The construction of improvised fighting vehicles may also reflect a lack of means for the force that uses them. This is especially true in developing countries, where various armies and guerrilla forces have used them, as they are more affordable than military-grade combat vehicles.

Modern examples include military gun truck used by units of regular armies or other official government armed forces, based on a conventional cargo truck, that is able to carry a large weight of weapons and armour. They have mainly been used by regular armies to escort military convoys in regions subject to ambush by guerrilla forces. "Narco tanks", used by Mexican drug cartels in the Mexican Drug War, are built from such trucks, which combines operational mobility, tactical offensive, and defensive capabilities.

An improvised fighting vehicle is an ad hoc combat vehicle resulting from modified or upgraded civilian or military non-combat vehicle, often constructed and employed by civilians, rebels, guerrillas, resistance movements or other forms of non-state militias. Such modifications usually consist of grafting armour plating and weapon systems onto a vehicle.

Various militias and official militaries have improvised such vehicles ever since the introduction of the first automobiles into military service.

During the early days, the absence of a doctrine for the military use of automobiles or of an industry dedicated to producing them lead to a great deal of improvisation in the creation of early armoured cars and similar vehicles.

"The Iron Whale"

"The Iron Whale" (1933) - a monster child of pre-war German engineer Herr Schiff. The Star Wars-kind of sea monster even comes equipped with electric eyes in front and a flexible tail.

Denizens in the ocean depths may soon find prowling among their haunts a huge iron monster swimming with fishlike motions and bearing a close resemblance to themselves. This strange monster is to be built from plans devised by Herr Schiff, a German engineer, who has already constructed a workable model for his astounding brainchild, which is shown in accompanying photos. The curious undersea craft is equipped with two fins and a tail which operate in the same manner as do these elements of a live fish. Intended chiefly for the exploration of the ocean bottom, the ship is said to be capable of maneuvering with all the flexibility of its fleshy prototype. Two electric eyes placed in the head for observation purposes make the resemblance to a sea serpent more complete. The craft was designed and constructed after an extensive study of the swimming motions of many types of fish, particularly the larger sharks and whales.

War of the Worlds 1890s and 1920s

The ‘Historical’ invasion of the 1890s (pretty much a rout of the humans initial the Martians succumb to micro-organisms).

The second Martin invasion in the 1920s. The earth has time to absorb Martian technology. WWI is averted by political and social changes brought on by the new technology and above all the threat of the next Martian assault on Earth. Human improvements include.

i.                    Zeppelins with ablative armour (anti Heat ray effect), Helium and the ability to go to high altitude.

ii.                  Landships, treated like tanks, except they have multiple weapons, which it can fire simultaneously. These vehicles have NBC protection from the Martian Black Dust. Both Heavy and Light Landships types are made.

iii.                Rocket Crawlers; which carry cannon and missiles. Both Heavy and Light Rocket Crawlers types are made.

iv.                Infantry Crawlers are primarily for transport of combat troops.

v.                  Autogiro Gunships are equipped with rapid-fire cannon and missiles or rockets.

vi.                Autogiro Transports are large aircraft able to transport combat troops or cargo.

vii.              Rocket Infantry are now used on the battlefield, equipped with both LAW and MAW missiles.

viii.            Smoke ammunition is available in this period.

The Reaper Tripod

As if tripod aliens are not terrifying enough, Architects of War has announced a new fearsome alien for their All Quiet On The Martian Front.

The Reaper Tripod is a massive close assault machine the Martians seemed to have designed specifically for breaching human fortifications and tearing apart buildings.

It is however quite potent in assault against even Land Ironclads.  Based on a Slaver chassis, it has the ability to control and direct Drones and is often accompanied by a swarm of them. Scorpion Drones seem particularly adept at flowing through a breach made by the Reaper and suppressing any defenders.

The Great Martian War

A captured Martian Spider on display today

Combining period archive with state-of-the-art special effects and featuring moving interviews with aging veterans, the show takes in the entire sweep of the conflict: from the devastation of Western Europe where a rag-tag alliance digs in against monstrous Alien war-machines unaware that deep flaws exist in their Generals’ central strategy, to the political battle for the Whitehouse where President Wilson struggles to maintain US Neutrality; from the skies of central London where allied bi-planes do spectacular battle with a towering Alien Tripod, to the War’s catastrophic final act in which the Allies, standing on the brink of total defeat, must decide if launching an untested and potentially devastating secret weapon is worth risking the lives of millions of men in the field and a global pandemic…

Unpacking and exploring these events are two Historians with opposing views about the conflict's many controversies, in particular an incendiary new discovery centred around the notorious ‘Martian Code’ - Uncrackable for a century, the vast cache of Alien war documents seized after the war have finally been deciphered, and appear to contain the direst of warnings that the war is far from over.
